WITH TEMPERATURES PLUMETING, there has never been a better time to rug up, plant yourself on your couch and find a new series to sink your teeth into. There’s no way around it, winter is the season of the binge watch. The great outdoors are becoming less hospitable while TV screens are looking even more enticing – and who are we to resist the charms of the golden age of streaming?
Streaming platforms are due for a big month this July. There’ll be something for everyone, with Vikings: Valhalla, Cobra Kai and The Twelve all returning for new seasons, as well as a number of new films and series making their debuts. The vast swaths of new content don’t make it easy for you though. The big hitters like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime are so packed with content that they make it difficult to discern what’s worth your time and what’s best left on the backburner – especially when you’re prone to indecision and are paying for the luxury of choice with subscriptions to multiple platforms.

What’s new on Netflix in July?
July Netflix Highlight – Vikings: Valhalla, season 3
A somewhat quieter month for Netflix is headlined by the final chapter of critically acclaimed historical series Vikings: Valhalla. A spin-off of Vikings, the series is yet to leave a viewer disappointed, with a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Since the spin-off was first announced, its creators have stated that they see the franchise wrapping up with the battle of Stamford Bridge, which took place in 1066 and is widely considered the end of the Viking age. Although, when last we left the gang, they were just about to begin pillaging Constantinople, on the other side of the European continent. Looks like they’ll have some travelling to do – did someone say Euro summer?
Also on Netflix in July, family favourite Karate Kid spin-off Cobra Kai is back for a sixth season. It really is fun for the whole family, with enough cool karate moves to keep the kids entertained, and enough nostalgia to keep Gen X parents coming back for more. Lastly, Beverly Hills Cop is finally getting another sequel for the first time in 20 years with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Eddie Murphy reprises his starring role alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

What’s new on Disney+ in July?
July Disney+ Highlight – Brats
Back in the ’80s, a group of loosely connected and similarly good looking young actors who were slated to be the next faces of Hollywood became known as the ‘Brat Pack’. The Brats included rising stars like Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and the director of new documentary Brats, Andrew McCarthy. In Bratz, McCarthy looks at the impact of young fame and fortune on the group’s shared trajectory, from an inside perspective.
Elsewhere on Disney+, keep an eye on The Acolyte, which is now five episodes into its first season. The first Star Wars series or film set outside the parameters of the ‘Skywalker Saga’, The Acolyte is a tense crime thriller set hundreds of years before the events of the main film timeline, and it’s setting itself up for a must-watch finale.

What’s new on Stan in July?
July Stan Highlight – Arcadian
So does Nicolas Cage exclusively act in horror movies and psychological thrillers now? Seriously, last year he was in Renfield, Sympathy for the Devil, The Retirement Plan and Dream Scenario – all thrillers in varying forms. Later this year, Cage will also appear in another psychological thriller, The Surfer, but before then, we’ll get to see Arcadian. The film stars Cage as a father of two sons in a dystopian near future, where he must battle nightmarish forces that only come out at night.
The Killing Kind will also premiere on Stan in July. The series follows a defence attorney who successfully defends a client against stalking charges and begins a relationship with him, only to become one of his victims. Finally, we can’t forget about the Olympics, which begin on July 26th and can be streamed on Stan.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in July?
July Amazon Prime Video Highlight – Those About To Die
Beating Gladiator 2 to the punch in capitalising on the Roman Empire hype, historical epic series Those About To Die stars Anthony Hopkins as a Roman Emperor. The series explores Rome’s dark side: the corruption, slavery and savagery that goes into gladiatorial combat, all for an audience who craves nothing but blood and sport.
July will also see two newly released films make their streaming debuts on Amazon Prime. First, Love Lies Bleeding, which stars Kristen Stewart in a romance surrounding a lonesome gym worker and a mysterious, – but undeniably buff – drifter, will arrive on July 9th. Then, guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare premieres on July 25th. It’s an action romp about a group of British special forces soldiers in World War II who hunt Nazis deep behind enemy lines. It’s likely to be more Inglorious Basterds than Dunkirk, but it’s supposedly based on a true story.

One of Binge’s most watched local offerings is getting another season. Sam Neill is back as a genius barrister in The Twelve. This time, he’s heading to Western Australia, where a matriarchal landowner has been found dead at the bottom of a well. Her own daughter and a farmhand stand accused of the murder as the most likely suspects, but a polarised group of jurors from all walks of Australian life mean the case will be anything but straightforward.
